Silver with Distinction Award
for incredible edibles® garden at
Ellerslie Flower Show 2010
|
This courtyard garden has been designed to be entirely edible. It has been created with the desire to encourage families to use their sometimes limited outdoor spaces in a healthy and fun way with space for play, interaction or quiet relaxation and of course to be full of delicious renewable treats. Every plant used has a function - some familiar - some unexpected. Oamaru limestone has been used to provide the garden with strong defined lines and a sophistication that fits well in a contemporary urban setting. The water feature lends a calming effect to the garden with the pergola and decking creating a space for relaxation or play. Wire sculptures depict fun and activity for children in this space and the swing and ladder illustrate the family friendly use of the garden for all ages. Interwoven colourful orbs echoing the richness of berries have been placed on the lawn again connecting the garden with playful family fun. The inspiration for this garden has come from pleasurable childhood memories of large though somewhat chaotic gardens at my grandparents and the desire for families to share the joy of low maintenance gardening, healthy food, outdoor fun and relaxing. It is with huge pleasure that after the show this garden will be gifted to Cholmondeley, a residential facility caring for Canterbury children and families. We hope it will continue to provide them with food, learning and fun. Look for ideas to use in your own garden be it large or small. Nothing is more satisfying as producing your own paradise where you can relax in the ambience and able to harvest your own fruit - so healthy and fun.
