Native to central Mexico & western South America and is a very popular fruit in these regions and frequently sold at markets.

Landscape Value

Stunning on a pergola where the large green leaves can provide shade all year, with the added bonus of a vibrant flower display in summer and tasty fruit in autumn. Plant over a fence, against a sheltered wall or deck. Need a strong structure to climb on.

Nutritional Value

High vitamin C, A, B, & iron.

How to Eat

Will add, a wonderful new dimension to ice-cream, yogurt or pavlova, or straight from the fruit.

Expected Yield

50 to 100 fruit in the right growing conditions.

Growing

Sun

Full sun or semi shade.

Wind

Not wind hardy and do not grow particularly well in salty marine locations.

Climate

Grow best in warm temperatures and are relatively frost tender but will grow back from the base if frost damaged.

Soil

Light well-drained soil is preferred; water logged soil will rapidly kill plants.

Fertiliser

Passionfruit are heavy feeders during the growing season and require high nitrogen based NPK fertiliser, such as citrus fertiliser. Apply fertiliser regularly during the growing season.

Pruning

The fruit is formed on current seasons wood on short laterals therefore prune in spring to encourage new fruiting growth.

Pests

Snails can be a problem and vines can be attacked by nematodes it is important that the soils not continuously wet as this can induce fungal rots.
